well, i used a regular 0.5 bic matic grip mechanical pencil. and for some of the dark darks i used an ebony pencil. which i don't use often. i like to stick to my bic. keep it simple. this one is a bit of an older one. i used a blending stump on it as well. on my newer work, i try to work in layers to create value instead of relying on a stump. does that help?
personally i thought the stub is a marvelous technique, its a fast method of rendering and when working with t3h white eraser, its almost like trying to render a painting.
i thought this too, but it's more challenging to get a smooth value without the stump, which attracts me to it. that, and i really like the way the tooth of the paper picks up the graphite. makes for really interesting contrast. an example is my thursday drawing. i like how crisp it is compared to the blurriness of the stump (don't get me wrong, i like the stump too). but i don't think i could have gotten as much detail in the thurday with a stump.
